Reddi P R. Tribute. J Indian Acad Oral Med Radiol 2021;33:116
It is with great pain and grief that I am writing this tribute to one of the past President and an active member of the Indian Academy of Oral Medicine and Radiology (IAOMR), Dr. D.B. Gandhi Babu, whom we lost on May 1, 2021, due to a massive heart attack. The untimely death of Dr. Gandhi Babu at such an early age fills me with profound sorrow and disbelief.
I have known Dr. Gandhi Babu since the days of his Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) course at Government Dental College and Hospital, Hyderabad. He was from the 1987 batch of BDS students. He later went on to pursue a Master of Dental Surgery (MDS) in Oral Medicine and Radiology at the same institute under my guidance in 1994.
Dr. Gandhi Babu was originally from the town of Ramachandrapuram in the east Godavari district in the state of Andhra Pradesh. With sheer hard work, he came up in life and earned a reputed name in society as well as the fraternity.
He was an active member of the Indian Academy of Oral Medicine and Radiology. He served as an EC Member in 2004, Vice President in 2005, Hon. Gen. Secretary in 2006–2007, and as the President of the Academy in 2010. He also served as a Member of the Journal Committee of the Journal of Indian Academy of Oral Medicine and Radiology (JIAOMR) in 2014–2015. During this time he guided the Editorial team to take the journal to new heights.
He was an acclaimed academician at the national level and a successful practitioner. He was loved and respected by all his students, both undergraduate and postgraduate students. He served as the Head of Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology in several acclaimed institutions such as S.B. Patil Dental College and Hospital, Bidar; Army College of Dental Sciences, Secunderabad; Sri Sai College of Dental Surgery, Vikarabad; Peoples Dental Academy, Bhopal; and Panineeya Mahavidyalaya Institute of Dental Sciences, Hyderabad.
He was a multifaceted and multitalented personality. He had exceptional skills as a singer, veena player, musician, and actor. He would leave his audience in awe when he played the veena. He also played the role of a Kabbadi coach in a Telugu language sports action film titled “Seetimaarr,” which was originally scheduled to be released on April 2, 2021.
He was well known for his jovial nature and he left an everlasting impression of admiration in all the people he met. He was well known for his gentle, magnanimous gestures, and philanthropic nature. He was always friendly with everyone. I will be missing his familiar happy face.
He is survived by his wife, Dr. Amrita and a son, Pradyumna. I pray to God to give the bereaved family the strength to bear this irreparable loss and may his soul rest in peace.
