   National Postgraduate Convention-2014 Top

The IAOMR National Postgraduate (PG) Convention 2014 was held in Bengaluru at the sprawling 28-acre picturesque campus of Dayananda Sagar Institutions. The convention was held on 25 th , 26 th , and 27 th July 2014, with preconvention courses held on 25 th July. The convention was attended by around 640 delegates from all over India. The scientific events consisted of keynote and guest lectures, panel discussion, paper and poster presentations by PG students and faculty members, quiz competition and, for the first time, a contest for new clinical innovations and debate was organized for the PG students. Four preconvention workshops were conducted on "Cone Beam Computed Tomography," "Lasers in Oral Medicine," "Chair-side Procedures," and "Forensic Odontology," which were well attended and appreciated. The preconvention courses were held at VS Dental College and RV Dental College, Bengaluru. The inaugural function was held at 11:00 AM on 26 th July 2014. Dr. B. S. Srinath, eminent surgical oncologist, Sri Shankara Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, Bengaluru was the chief guest. In the inaugural ceremony, the new look IAOMR website and the journal website were also launched. The first issue of the journal for 2014 was released. The souvenir was also released in the e-form.

Dr. David H. Felix, Dean for Postgraduate Dental Education, NHS Education for Scotland, UK delivered the keynote lecture on "Oral Medicine Problems in the Aged - Changes and Challenges." Guest lectures were delivered by Dr. N. Gnanasundaram on "Therapeutics of oro-facial pain," Dr. Hemant Umarji on "Basic and advanced radiographic interpretation," Dr. Chandramani More on "Immunological and biochemical markers in oral carcinogenesis: Current status and future research," Dr. Sharath Damodar, Senior Consultant and Head, Bone Marrow Transplant Unit, Narayana Hrudayalaya Multi-Speciality Hospital and Mazumdar Shaw Cancer Center, Bengaluru on "Oral manifestations of hematological diseases," and Dr. Brinda Sitaram, Founder-Director, Centre of Psycho-oncology for Education and Research (COPER), Bengaluru on "Doctor-Patient relationship. . . What's the fuss about!" More than 320 papers and around 90 posters were presented. The papers were reviewed and evaluated by 166 reviewers from across the country; the comments were conveyed to the authors for necessary changes to be made prior to presentation. The posters were evaluated by two senior faculty members and the best 10 posters were selected for oral presentation at the convention. For the first time, two new events, a debate competition and clinical innovation to showcase the ideas of the young minds, were held for the PG students, which received an overwhelming response. Dr. Chaya M. David was the Organizing Chairperson, Dr. M. Manjunath was the Organizing Co-Chairperson, Dr. B. K. Ramnarayan was the Organizing Secretary, and Dr. Uma Patil was the Treasurer of the convention. The convention concluded on 27 th evening with the valedictory program and prize distribution.

   New IAOMR and JIAOMR Website Inauguration Top

The new look IAOMR website (http://www.iaomr.org/) and the new JIAOMR website (https://www.jiaomr.in/) were launched at the inaugural ceremony of the National Postgraduate Convention 2014 by the President of IAOMR, Dr. Basavaraj Kallali on 26 th July 2014.

   The Third Executive Committee Meeting of EC-2014 Top

The 3 rd Executive Committee (EC) Meeting of EC-2014 was conducted on 26 th July 2014 in the Board Room at Dayananda Sagar College of Dental Sciences, Bengaluru. The meeting started at 3:00 PM and since there was no quorum, the meeting was postponed. The meeting re-started after the Panel Discussion at 4:00 PM. The meeting began with the collaring of the President, Dr. Basavaraj Kallali, by the Honorary Secretary (HGS), Dr. S. Shiva Prasad. The meeting was called to order by the President. The meeting was conducted in a smooth and cordial manner. The minutes of the 2 nd EC meeting and the action taken were confirmed and passed. Next, the Editor-in-Chief (EiC), Dr. K. Sri Krishna, informed the members that Medknow Publications had trained the Editorial Team on using the website for processing of the manuscripts. Further, he informed the gathering that out of a total of 105 articles submitted, 21 which were not of good quality were rejected and 25 were selected for the first issue. On a query from Dr. Chaya David, the EiC informed that standards similar to PUBMED-indexed journals were being followed for the review process. Matters related to service tax were also discussed. The Treasurer informed the members that according to the Chartered Accountant, service tax is applicable on an association if the annual budget crosses Rs. 9 lakhs. Since the Head Office budget was only Rs. 3-5 lakhs annually, he informed the gathering that the Academy does not come under the purview of service tax. The audited reports of the Triple "O" symposium conducted at Greater Nodia and the PG symposium at Vadodhara were discussed. Matters regarding the UG, PG, and staff essay competitions, best dissertation competition, and the best outgoing student award in Oral Medicine and Radiology at the university level were discussed. It was decided to draft a letter to the Awards Committee to select the topic for the essay competition. The date for the next AGM was decided to be 22 nd November 2014 at 3:00 PM at Mangalore. Dr. Prashanth Shenoy, Organizing Secretary of the 26 th national conference at Mangalore, informed the members about the keynote speakers and other issues related to the conference. Dr. Rakesh Nagaraju updated the gathering on the proposed UG convention at Bengaluru on 20 th September 2014. The meeting ended with the fixing of the date for the next EC meeting and the meeting was adjourned by the President.

   National Undergraduate Convention-2014 Top

The National Undergraduate Convention was organized by the Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology, The Oxford Dental College at Bengaluru. The convention was conducted with the theme, "Synergy through understanding - Connecting general health and oral health." The aim of the convention was to create awareness among the undergraduate students about the importance of oral health in general health. The convention had an overwhelming participation of 520 delegates with keynote lectures from eminent speakers, paper presentations, poster presentations, and quiz. The National UG convention culminated with a very encouraging positive feedback.

   Obituary: Dr. G. Gopal Kishan Gupta Top

Dr. G. Gopal Kishan Gupta, who rose from a humble beginning, was self-disciplined and lived his life with vigor, and held a high level of moral and ethical standards. A member of IAOMR (LM-75), well-known for his gentle manners, he passed away on 13 th August 2014 in Hyderabad.
