Late Prof. B K Venkataraman was a Doyen of Dentistry in the country. Coming from a middle class family in Mysore, he obtained MBBS from Mysore Medical College and joined service in the Government Health Department of Mysore state. The Government of Mysore decided to start dental college in Bangalore and selected Dr. S Ramachandra and Dr. B K Venkataraman to plan the dental college in the year 1958. Dr. B K Venkataraman was deputed to Mumbai to do condense BDS and on his return, he joined as faculty. Later, he was deputed for training in Certificate course in Oral Medicine under WHO exchange Program. He served as Lecturer, Asst. Professor, Professor, and Vice Principal in Government Dental College (GDC), before becoming Principal in the year 1974, which he held till the year 1979. He was trained under legends Prof. Burket and Prof. Southam.
He was instrumental in starting Oral Medicine as UG subject at GDC in the year 1967 and PG in the year 1970, first of its kind in the country. During his stewardship, all round development of college was seen. He was elected as President of Dental Council of India in the year 1976, first from South India to occupy the post. During his tenure, to extend specialist service to rural areas, he was instrumental in starting 1 year PG diploma in nine specialties. He was the Dean of Faculty Medicine in Bangalore University and instrumental in starting courses in Institute of aviation medicine in Bangalore.
After his retirement, he served in university of Benghazi, Libya. Later, he served as Principal in M R Ambedkar Dental College; Siddhartha Dental College, Tumkur; and Professor Emeritus in Raja Rajeshwari Dental College. He was an academician of par excellence, encouraged vast number of students and faculty. He was very keen to write textbook in Oral Medicine and put all efforts to bring out the first edition in January 2013, which is very popular. He was working on second edition. He was nice human being and was first to call his students on occasions like New Year, Teacher's day, etc., Alas, he died on Teacher's Day. He has left behind, wife, a son, a daughter, and their families. His family is very simple and cultured. He and his wife are known for hospitality to vast number of visitors. His contribution to the Indian Academy of Oral Medicine and Radiology will always be remembered. Our heartfelt Shraddhanjali to the departed soul, prayers for the bereaved family, and fraternity to bear through this irreplaceable loss.
