Warm greetings from the Editorial Board (2020-21) to all the members of IAOMR.

It gives me immense pleasure to be the Editor-in-Chief of the esteemed journal of IAOMR, and I thank you all for giving me this opportunity to serve in this manner. Since the last three decades, the journal has been respected and treasured by academicians, researchers, private practitioners and students. I would be following the footsteps of the luminaries, legends and previous editors who have contributed and nourished the journal.

As a famous saying goes, “Direction determines destination.” We, in IAOMR, by providing accurate and precise diagnosis, by combining the knowledge of general medicine, specific oral diseases augmented with modern maxillofacial imaging techniques such as CBCT and MRI stand at the frontline of the dental fraternity.

We are living in the challenging times, novel viruses, globalization, climate change and artificial intelligence have presented us with plethora of new challenges to be met in our professional endeavors. We, the oral diagnosticians, should be ready to face these challenges, unlearn old conventions and recalibrate our research and knowledge base keeping in mind the present realities and future possibilities. We have seen a paradigm shift in past decade with augmented reality and machine learning becoming a reality. Artificial intelligence will inevitably play a crucial role in accurate diagnosis, screening and classifying oral lesions. Advances in image recognition software which use artificial intelligence will improve the need for individual interpretation skills and make radiographic interpretations free of human errors. Traditional teaching approaches in Oral Medicine and Radiology will be greatly improved incorporating these systems.

As the editor of the journal, it will be my utmost priority to improve the quality and maintain the regularity of the journal following the foundations laid by our predecessors. With enhanced globalization, the need has been felt to increase contributions from internationally acclaimed researchers and authors in our journal.

I look forward with great excitement and enthusiasm to deliver on my responsibilities as the Editor-in-Chief. To quote Ernest Hemingway, a great American novelist and Nobel Prize winner, “We are all apprentices in the art where no one becomes a master.” This will require complete support and cooperation of all the members of the academy, reviewers, authors and my esteemed colleagues.

Let us all come together and begin a fantastic journey in these challenging times.

Dr. Dipti Bhatnagar

Editor-in-Chief, Journal of Indian Academy of Oral Medicine and Radiology
