Research is to see what everybody else has seen, and to think what nobody else has thought.

-Albert Szent-Gyorgyi, Noble Prize winner for Medicine, 1937.

Greetings to all!

Research, basic and applied, is a process for the greater conduct of science. It is a creative and systematic work undertaken to understand, analyze, and increase the stock of knowledge, to establish or confirm facts, expand and reaffirm the results of previous work, solve new or existing limitations, support or develop newer studies to increase the longevity of human life.

Study design, randomized, nonrandom, or adaptive, is the formulation of trials and experiments as well as observational studies in medical and clinical research with a goal to assess the safety, efficacy, and the mechanism of action of an existing or investigational product or process.

It is that time of the year where all newly admitted postgraduate students would be engrossed in choosing topics for thesis. So, I decided to dedicate this editorial to highlight the importance of research and study designs.

Research in the advancement of medical field has led to a complimentary insight of newer technologies for better diagnosis and treatment modalities. With constant perseverance of research in science, significant discoveries have led to newer heights and opened many doors for a remarkable improvement in the quality of public health.

Every research begins with a question that has to be answered with a systematic planning, which is an important aspect of study design. Coherence of any study depends on study design, and hence, it is considered as the backbone of any successful research. We have moved from the days of individual expert opinions to scientifically designed, evidence-based methodological studies.

Studies have various classifications depending on the method of collection and evaluation of data. Having knowledge of the characteristics of these designs is of great importance since they have their own advantages and limitations. Also, it helps in understanding the applicability of research findings. As beginners, our decision of study design should not solely depend mimicking the existing scientific literature but also on factors like risk exposure, financial resources, and practical feasibility. One can follow the classification or plan their own study design with in-depth and intensive knowledge of estimated analysis or drawn conclusions between the degree of associated variables, both seasonal and controlled. Awareness of study protocols, justified ethical considerations, and legally based regulations before implementation of studies is important to avoid fallacies while drawing acceptable conclusions.

Many statistical tools are available for analysis of the results but the collaboration of a biometrician improves the certainty and quality of the study to demonstrate that it is more effective than the given reference or the currently best available hypothesis. Lastly, “what is obvious to you is amazing to others.” Communicating the research work through publications is important if not more than research itself.

Quality research work conducted in a concise and conducive manner that improve knowledge, complying with standards across observed parameters, and sustained differences with no conflict of interest if involved are well accepted by peer reviewed journals. Unique research of integrated and original scientific ideas devoid of plagiarism is one of the best-disciplined ways of contributing to our subject.

Progress occurs with different thoughts and it is time for new ideas from a new generation.
